Trading Beyond the Matrix: The Red Pill for Traders and Investors is one of the first trading books that made a lot of sense to me. It is written by Van K. Tharp, a trading specialist and trading coach. The book focuses on sound trading principles that are essential to profitable trading, each principle taught by former students of Tharp's trader training institute. If you are interested in learning more about Dr. Tharp's trading institute, please go to vantharp.com
The book is Written by Ordinary People
The contributors to the book are all ordinary people who have benefited from Van K. Tharp's courses and training programs, they work for no
trading institute, bank or other entity, they are simple retail traders. Though this does feel very much like a marketing tactic, it is nice to hear about traders who have struggled to make profit and their journey to becoming successful. Each contributor shares 'light bulb' moments that helped them change their trading around.
The book focuses on Psychology
Trading Beyond the Matrix is not a publication full of trading strategies (though I do like those books too), it shares real life examples of how traders kept losing due to following emotion and psychology and how these traders found a way to overcome these trading obstacles. Some of you may be disappointed to know there are no trading strategies in this book but trading psychology and emotion is most often the biggest challenge for traders, lacking a trading strategy is not.
It is well structured
I really like how Trading Beyond the Matrix is structured. The trading book is a collection of stories and advice by former Tharp students. Due to the nature of this, it is easy to read a chapter at a time and feel very satisfied. Each chapter teaches different principles and contains content from a different student.
Summary
I recommend reading Trading Beyond the Matrix, for those who struggle with trading emotion and psychology it can be a very beneficial read. I do not consider the book a classic or a 'must-read' but I enjoyed the publication and feel that it is a nice addition to my trading library.
